UGA scholars in every field are contributing to UGA's rising national stature in research.

UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA RESEARCH makes a difference in people’s lives — here in Georgia and around the world. In science, the humanities, agriculture, business, government, the fine arts and the social sciences, UGA scholars are seeking answers and solving human dilemmas.

In the mid-1800s, we helped Georgia farmers grow better cotton. Now we’re helping to map the human genome, to safeguard Georgia’s water, to develop new methods for detecting and treating cancer. And yes, we’re still improving crops and livestock. We’ve even cloned cows and pigs.

In laboratory and classroom, UGA students do more than learn about human advancement — they take part in it. And our technology transfer and extension programs take this new knowledge directly into Georgia communities. The University of Georgia’s ranking as a research institution is steadily rising; many of our scholars and programs have achieved international renown. Thanks to investments from the Georgia Research Alliance, we are recruiting eminent, high-profile scholars from all over the country — and beyond.

In the intensely competitive arena of external funding, UGA is winning more research grants than ever before. But grants don’t pay for facilities, equipment, or permanent faculty. To maintain and accelerate our momentum, the University needs new facilities; more support for basic and applied research; and endowed chairs that will continue to attract top researchers — and top graduate students — to UGA.

The University’s ambitious vision is already in progress. We will soon open the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. A new Complex Carbohydrate Research Center building is enabling us to expand our efforts in a field that may hold the clues to curing AIDS and cancer. We must continue to build our infrastructure in order to take the University of Georgia to the next level.

Our Strategic Plan says that we can do this. It says, in fact, that we must. It also shows us how.

The Archway to Excellence Campaign is the CORE OF THE STRATEGY.
