Each year in the United States, more than 13,500 patients undergo kidney transplants. Drug therapy for these patients is long-term and intense. That’s where Marie Chisholm comes in. As both an associate professor of pharmacy at the UGA College of Pharmacy and associate professor of medicine at the Medical College of Georgia,
Chisholm, with the financial support of the Carlos and Marguerite Mason trust fund, founded the Medication Access Program. MAP’s mission is to increase access to medications for solid organ transplant patients in Georgia. MAP educates patients and healthcare professionals about medication assistance programs. It also helps patients complete applications and enroll in these programs. As of Sept. 2003 the program has obtained more than $4.9 million for 380 transplant patients in Georgia. MORE

  MISSION:
Some 30 million people in the United States suffer from the debilitating effects painful inflammation in the musculoskeletal tissues of the joints. Unfortunately, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, orally in the large doses required to alleviate the symptoms can cause serious adverse effects. UGA pharmacy professor H. Won Jun uses one or more melting point depressing agents to turn solid ibuprofen into an oily state at room temperature. This oily composition can be readily formulated into a cream, a lotion, an emulsion or an ointment for topical delivery of the drug. His method to employ topical application of the pharmaceutical formulation is not limited to human use, but further provides for veterinary and agricultural animal applications. MORE

recognition Opportunities

Gifts are needed to establish scholarships, fellowships, professorships and distinguished chairs — all in the interest of attracting and retaining the best and brightest students and faculty. Other endowments will strengthen pharmaceutical research and development programs and provide postgraduate educational opportunities for Georgia’s practitioners. The College is seeking lead gifts to fulfill its goal of a new pharmacy facility. Commitments to the programs and facilities may be recognized by various naming opportunities within the complex.
